Reggio Emilia with a Montessori Influence
The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) is the foundation of our learning programme at Nurture Early Learning, and our educators have a strong knowledge of the outcomes associated with the EYLF, using these as a foundation for creating tailored learning experiences.
At Nurture Early Learning, we also follow Reggio Emilia inspired practice. The use of natural materials in the rooms, embracing inquiry-based learning projects, fostering the ‘100 Languages’ of children and supporting the environment as the child’s third teacher are all elements of Reggio Emilia which are an integral part of the learning experiences and programme at our service.
Environments are well planned and thoughtfully prepared with natural light harnessed and spaces which are reflective of the unique culture and context of the children, their families and their local community. Provocations and inquiry projects provide ongoing and deep learning opportunities where the children can explore topics of their personal interest, find answers to their questions or further explore their bounty of ideas.
The role of our educators is one of collaboration. They are seen as partners in learning alongside the children, supporting each child to meet learning goals as well as discover new concepts. Our educators advocate for each child’s learning by viewing them as individuals and creating meaningful opportunities for child-led play and exploration in the indoor and outdoor environments.
The ‘100 Languages’ of children emphasises children’s diverse ways of expressing themselves and their learning. Understanding the ‘100 Languages’ leads to consideration of how children learn best whilst also encouraging creativity, enhancing communication skills, building strong connections, strengthening problem-solving abilities and supporting individual learning styles.
Elements of Montessori teaching and learning practices are lightly integrated across our classrooms. Aspects such as grace and courtesy and practical life skills (a focus in Montessori education) can be seen through independent tasks demonstrated by the children, including scraping their own plates after mealtimes, family-style meals, pushing in their chair and returning materials to designated areas. There is a strong emphasis on building the children’s independence through educator guidance, mutual respect between educators and children and consistency with expectations.
Blending the outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) with elements of Reggio Emilia practice and Montessori philosophy ensures our Nurture children are provided with meaningful learning opportunities which are preparing them for their present and future learning journey.
